ANIMAL PRODUCTION

Animal production, also known as animal husbandry, is the branch of agriculture concerned with the raising of animals for meat, milk, eggs, fiber, or other products. It includes the day-to-day care, breeding, feeding, and management of livestock.

Livestock refers to domesticated animals raised in an agricultural setting to produce commodities. This includes cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry, horses, and rabbits.

Animal husbandry has a long history, dating back to the Neolithic Revolution around 13,000 BC, when humans first began to domesticate animals. Over time, humans have developed a wide range of techniques for raising animals, including selective breeding to improve desired traits, such as milk production or meat quality.

There are two main types of animal production systems:

  • Grazing systems: In grazing systems, animals are raised on pastures or rangelands, where they feed on grass and other forage crops. This type of system is most commonly used for raising cattle, sheep, and goats.
  • Confined animal feeding operations (CAFOs): CAFOs are large-scale facilities where animals are raised in confinement. They are typically used for raising pigs, poultry, and dairy cattle.

Animal production plays an important role in the global food system. It provides a significant source of protein, fat, and other essential nutrients for human consumption. It also provides income for farmers and jobs in related industries.

However, animal production also has a number of environmental impacts. These include greenhouse gas emissions, water pollution, and deforestation. As the global population grows, the demand for animal products is expected to increase. This will put a strain on resources and the environment.

There is a growing movement towards more sustainable forms of animal production. These include organic farming, which avoids the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, and pasture-based dairying, which raises cows on pastures rather than in confinement.
